Hon’ble Governor of Sikkim Shri Ganga Prasad today inaugurated a three days Post Congress Satellite Workshop on “Next Generation Sequencing and Future of Genomics “ at College of Agricultural Engineering and Post Harvest Technology at Ranipool, East Sikkim.

The workshop has been jointly organised by Purnia University,Bihar and Central Agricultural University,Imphal.The workshop also has the presence of various members from Association of Vice Chancellors and Academicians. As many as 20  Vice Chancellors and eminent professors from different Universities are attending the workshop starting today.

Addressing the inaugural session, Hon’ble Governor underlined the need to work diligently towards ensuring food security and other agro products. This has become all the more urgent in the backdrop of climate change, rapid urbanisation, increase in population and shrinking area under cultivation around the world, he added. Hon’ble Governor further mentioned about the challenges posed by climate change, deteriorating soil quality, decreasing level of water for farming, change in cropping patterns and productivity . He stressed that only genetic engineering and next generation sequencing will ensure the sustainability of agriculture and to that effect, entire human kind and called for serious effort on the part of Agricultural Scientists and policy makers to chart future course of action.

Hon’ble Governor, while reminding all the eminent scientists and participants about the vow of doubling farmers income by 2022  taken by the country, stated that the greater responsibility lies on agricultural scientists to accomplish this mission alongside farmers and policy makers.

He hailed the initiative as a futuristic one and expressed its positive outcome for time bound implementation of agenda and points of action that will be charted by the workshop towards sustainability of agriculture and food security.
