Hon’ble Governor of Sikkim Shri Ganga Prasad today visited NaveyShotak Gram Panchayat Unit in East Sikkim and interacted with the Gram Panchayat members, PRI functionaries, farmers, local entrepreneurs and villagers in general. Area MLA, KabiLungtsok Constituency Shri UgenNedup Bhutia, Addl. Chief Secretary to Hon’ble Governor Dr K Jayakumar, officers of Raj Bhavan, ADC (Development) North, BDO Kabi Block  and other departmental representatives were present on the occasion. This was Hon’ble Governor’s second visit to the gram panchayat following his adoption of the GPU in November last year.

The visit saw a wide range of discussion and formulation of projects to promote rural livelihood and entrepreneurship through various interventional measures specially in the sectors of organic farming, food processing, apparel design and production, production of bamboo handicrafts among other areas. During the interaction involving the stakeholders, the need of capacity building and training in all sectors was stressed and a comprehensive plan was drawn and specific groups with required modalities were impanelled for training within and outside the state.

Further, to promote local farmers in organic production and marketing, a Farmers Producers Organisation (FPO) was  formed which will be facilitated by the state agencies. At later stage, a mini agro-processing unit is proposed to be set up in the GPU which will help value addition and marketing of organic products produced in the area.

Addressing the villagers, Hon’ble Governor stressed on the need to capitalise on the advantages of organic status achieved by the State nationally and internationally. He added that there is immediate need to transform rural economy by means of dairy farming, food processing and setting up small industries  and enhance rural entrepreneurship through various capacity building measures. He also outlined the motive behind adopting the GPU which will inspire others to emulate the initiatives that would be accomplished in the village. Earlier, members of the Gram Panchayat presented  a brief overview of the interventions they require in various rural sectors.

Addl. Chief Secretary to Governor, in his address, provided the insight into the possible outcome that Governor’s secretariat foresee once the plans and initiatives will get implemented with active participation of the stakeholders in the village.

Earlier on the day, an Operations Management Centre has also been inaugurated by Hon’ble Governor which would function as control and facilitation centre for adoption initiatives of the GPU.
