Hon’ble Governor of Sikkim, Shri Shriniwas Patil today participated in a special consultative meeting for India ASEAN Special Commemorative Summit to be held on 25th January 2018 in New Delhi to mark the 25th year of Indo ASEAN relationship. The meeting was called by Ministry of External Affairs in a view to integrate the issues of all eight North Eastern States and their stakes in Act East Policy which aim to expand the Indo ASEAN partnership through North East. Union Minister for External Affairs Smt. Sushma Swaraj, senior officials of External Affairs Ministry and all the Governors of North Eastern States were present on the occasion.


It may be mentioned that Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has already articulated North Eastern region as gateway to South East Asia and has sought to strengthen all round connectivity in the region to capitalise on the potential of Indo ASEAN partnership.


Placing the concerns of Sikkim in the consultative meeting, Hon’ble Governor drew attention of the External Affairs Ministry towards reopening of stalled Kailash Manasarovar Yatra through Nathula and need to increase the number of pilgrims through this route. Hon’ble Governor in the meeting, also underlined the need to expand the Indo China Border Trade through Nathu-La in terms of volume and number of tradable commodities.


With a view to capitalise on the immense possibilities in Buddhist Pilgrimage tourism circuit in the Indo ASEAN Region, Hon’ble Governor urged the Ministry to facilitate tourists from South East Asian countries with majority Buddhist population like Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam and Laos to visit various holy sites of Buddhism in Sikkim. He also called for relaxation in Inner Line Permit (ILP) while issuing permits to the pilgrims visiting Sikkim from ASEAN countries.
