04.02.2026 : The ICAR -Research Complex for NEHR, Sikkim Centre, Gangtok organised a stakeholders’ workshop on pre-kharif crop planning cum farmer-scientist interaction today at ICAR, Tadong Gangtok.
The ICAR -Research Complex for North Eastern Hill Region (NEHR), Sikkim Centre, Gangtok organised a stakeholders’ workshop on pre-kharif crop planning cum farmer-scientist interaction today at ICAR, Tadong Gangtok. The Governor of Sikkim, Shri Om Prakash Mathur graced the occasion as the chief guest.
The programme was attended by Dr. Ashok Kumar, Head of regional centre, ICAR, Sikkim Centre, Shri Tushar Nikhare, District Magistrate of Gangtok district, scientists, officers staff of ICAR, Gangtok and a progressive farmers.
Firstly, the Governor visited the ICAR farm and reviewed the progress of seasonal vegetable and fruit cultivation. The farm cultivates various vegetables with beans along with others. The visit included interaction with scientists and other officials of ICAR and a focus on utilizing scientific techniques for agricultural productivity. While interacting with scientists, the Governor has expressed serious concern on the declining productivity of large cardamom and orange in the State. Further, he emphasized the need for research to revive these two important crops.
He stressed to develop a mechanism that would directly benefit farmers and increase their interest in agriculture as well as provide them in-depth information about various farming activities.
Addressing the workshop, the Governor, Shri Mathur said, “Agriculture is the backbone of the Indian economy and farmers are the soul and life of agriculture.” The Governor emphasized the need to preserve and strengthen Sikkim’s Organic farming tag. He urged the farmers to adopt innovative strategies to boost organic production and improve productivity.
Underlining the crucial role of the Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) as a bridge between the laboratories and farmland, the Governor urged the officials to strengthen the centres in the State to ensure the farmer gets superior and resilient seeds, hands-on training to farmers to enhance productivity, mechanised harvesting and a market providing the best price for their products. He further mentioned Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) where FPOs should take the lead role in marketing organic produce. He also assured full support from Lok Bhawan
An interaction session was held between the Governor, scientists, farmers, and other government officials where farmers shared their experiences and challenges. Farmers raised issues related
crop damages, wild animals, pests, and diseases.
On the occasion, the Governor inaugurated an exhibition stall where various organic products of Sikkim were displayed.
During the programme the Governor handed over farm implements viz; mini power tillers, paddy threshers, electric generators, and grass cutters to beneficiaries. All these tools were distributed under the TSP project by ICAR.
भारतीय कृषि अनुसंधान परिषद, पूर्वोत्तर पर्वतीय अनुसंधान परिसर, सिक्किम केन्द्र में आज खरीफ-पूर्व फसल योजना पर हितधारकों की कार्यशाला एवं किसान–वैज्ञानिक संवाद का आयोजन किया गया। इस अवसर पर सिक्किम के माननीय राज्यपाल श्री ओम प्रकाश माथुर मुख्य अतिथि के रूप में उपस्थित रहे।
इस दौरान गंगटोक जिला के जिलाधिकारी श्री तुषार निखारे, संस्थान प्रमुख श्री अशोक कुमार सहित अधिकारियों, कर्मचारियों तथा बड़ी संख्या में किसानों की उपस्थिति रही।
राज्यपाल महोदय ने सबसे पहले वैज्ञानिकों के साथ संवाद करते हुए आईसीएआर फार्म का भ्रमण किया और वृक्षारोपण भी किया।
राज्यपाल महोदय ने फार्म में एक-एक फसल का विस्तार से निरीक्षण किया और जानकारी प्राप्त की। फार्म में मौसमी सब्जियाँ एवं फल जैसे राजमा, बीन्स आदि लगे हुए थे।
राज्यपाल महोदय ने बड़ी इलायची और संतरे की उत्पादकता में गिरावट पर चिंता व्यक्त करते हुए संबंधित अधिकारियों को इस पर अनुसंधान करने का निर्देश दिया। उन्होंने वैज्ञानिकों और अधिकारियों से आग्रह किया कि इस दिशा में ठोस उपाय किए जाएँ। साथ ही उन्होंने कहा कि किसानों में कृषि के प्रति रुचि पैदा करने के लिए ऐसी पहल विकसित की जाए जिससे उन्हें प्रत्यक्ष लाभ मिल सके।
अपने संबोधन में राज्यपाल महोदय ने कहा कि विकसित भारत के चार स्तंभों में किसानों की सबसे बड़ी भूमिका है। उन्होंने किसानों से आग्रह किया कि वे जैविक सिक्किम की पहचान बनाए रखें। किसानों से संवाद करते हुए उन्होंने इस बात पर जोर दिया कि सहयोग विभिन्न स्थानों से मिलेगा, लेकिन वास्तविक मेहनत खेतों में करनी होगी। उन्होंने कहा कि देश आगे बढ़ रहा है और किसानों की भूमिका इसमें अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण है।
राज्यपाल महोदय ने कृषि विज्ञान केन्द्र की गतिविधियों पर चर्चा की और किसान उत्पादक संगठन (FPOs) के महत्व को रेखांकित किया। उन्होंने संबंधित अधिकारियों को युवाओं को शामिल करते हुए नर्सरी विकसित करने का निर्देश दिया ताकि उन्हें सशक्त बनाया जा सके और कृषि को नई ऊँचाइयों तक ले जाया जा सके। उन्होंने लोकभवन की ओर से हर संभव सहयोग का आश्वासन भी दिया।
संवाद के दौरान राज्य के विभिन्न क्षेत्रों के किसानों ने अपनी चुनौतियाँ साझा कीं। विशेष रूप से किसानों ने बताया कि जानवरों द्वारा फसलों को नुकसान पहुँचाना एक बड़ी समस्या है। साथ ही जोंगु क्षेत्र के किसानों ने अपने उत्पादों को बेचने के लिए बाजार की आवश्यकता पर बल दिया।
कार्यक्रम में माननीय राज्यपाल द्वारा प्रदर्शनी स्टॉल का उद्घाटन किया गया, जिसमें सिक्किम के जैविक उत्पादों का प्रदर्शन किया गया।
