08.04.2026 : Sikkim Governor, Shri Om Prakash Mathur inaugurated the exhibition titled “Alexandra David-Neel: A Journey into Buddhism (1912–1916)” at the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology (NIT), Deora
Sikkim Governor, Shri Om Prakash Mathur inaugurated the exhibition titled “Alexandra David-Neel: A Journey into Buddhism (1912–1916)” at the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology (NIT), Deorali here in the presence of Ambassador of France to India, Dr Thierry Mathou, Ambassador of Belgium to India, Shri Didier Vanderhasselt, Ambassador of Switzerland to India, Smt Maya Tissafi.
The exhibition features photographs from the collection of Maison Alexandra David-Neel, Digne-les-Bains, France, displayed at the premises of NIT.
In his address, Governor Shri Om Prakash Mathur stated that the exhibition brings out the life and contributions of Alexandra David-Neel and her role in introducing Buddhist philosophy from India to the Western world through her writings. He noted that she spent over three years in Sikkim, where she interacted with people across sections of society including the royal family.
He further stated that her stay in Sikkim contributed to her understanding of Buddhist philosophy, spiritual practice and the Tibetan language, and laid the foundation for her later journeys and writings. He added that her interaction with local scholars strengthened her knowledge, which later supported her journey to Lhasa and her work in presenting Buddhist thought.
The Governor stated that Sikkim represents a centre of spirituality, culture and knowledge, and that Buddhist teachings have shaped the social and cultural life of the State.
On the occasion, he expressed gratitude to the Government of India for announcing the Buddhist Circuit Development Scheme for the North-East in the Union Budget. He stated that the initiative will support the promotion of Buddhism and provide scope to showcase the cultural and spiritual heritage of Sikkim and the North-Eastern region.
The Governor further stated that the legacy of Alexandra David-Neel and Sikkim’s association with Buddhist traditions adds relevance to the scheme. He expressed confidence that the initiative will support cultural identity and the preservation of heritage.
The Governor congratulated the Embassy of France, the French Institute in India, the Embassies of Belgium and Switzerland, and all officials involved in organising the exhibition.
Ambassador of France to India, Dr Thierry Mathou, in his address, expressed his pleasure at being part of the exhibition and stated that such initiatives strengthen cultural understanding and academic exchange. He stated that the life and work of Alexandra David-Neel continues to hold importance in strengthening cultural connections between India and Europe. He also appreciated the efforts of Research Consultant, Namgyal Institute of Tibetology and Convenor of the Exhibition-cum-Symposium, Dr Anna Balikci Denjongpa, for curating and organising the exhibition.
Earlier, Director, NIT, Dr Passang D Phempu, in his welcome address stated that the exhibition reflects the institute’s continued engagement in research and cultural documentation. He also expressed gratitude to the collaborating institutions and partners for their support in organising the exhibition.
Research Consultant, Namgyal Institute of Tibetology and also the Convenor of the Exhibition-cum-Symposium, Dr Anna Balikci Denjongpa, presented an introduction to the exhibition. She outlined its concept, highlighted the historical context of Alexandra David-Neel’s association with Sikkim, and explained the significance of the photographic collection and its documentation. She also informed the gathering about the objectives of the exhibition and its role in promoting research and cultural understanding.
The programme included the screening of a documentary titled “Alexandra David-Neel: From Sikkim to Forbidden Tibet”.
The exhibition was attended by Her Royal Highness Ashi Kesang Wangmo Wangchuck of Bhutan, Country Director, French Institute in India, Shri Gregor Trumel, Consul General of France in Kolkata, Shri Thierry Morel, along with delegates, officials and research scholars.
सिक्किम के माननीय राज्यपाल श्री ओम प्रकाश माथुर जी ने ‘एलेक्ज़ेंड्रा डेविड-नील: ए जर्नी इंटू बौद्धिज़्म’ प्रदर्शनी का उद्घाटन किया
आज नामग्याल इंस्टीट्यूट ऑफ तिब्बतोलॉजी के तत्वावधान में आयोजित प्रदर्शनी ‘एलेक्ज़ेंड्रा डेविड-नील: ए जर्नी इंटू बौद्धिज़्म’’ का उद्घाटन सिक्किम के माननीय राज्यपाल श्री ओम प्रकाश माथुर ने किया।
इस अवसर पर भारत में फ्रांस के राजदूत डॉ. थियरी माथू, भारत में बेल्जियम के राजदूत श्री डिडिएर वांडरहासेल्ट, भारत में स्विट्ज़रलैंड की राजदूत श्रीमती माया तिस्साफी, भूटान राजघराने से आशी केसांग वांगमो वांगचुक, फ्रांस के महावाणिज्य दूत, कोलकाता श्री थियरी मोरेल, भारत में फ्रेंच इंस्टीट्यूट के निदेशक श्री ग्रेगर ट्रुमेल, नामग्याल इंस्टीट्यूट ऑफ तिबेटोलॉजी के निदेशक डॉ. पासंग डी. फेम्पु, प्रदर्शनी क्यूरेटर डॉ. अन्ना बालिकची, विशिष्ट अतिथिगण, आयोजकगण और जनसमुदाय उपस्थित रहे |
उद्घाटन समारोह को संबोधित करते हुए माननीय राज्यपाल ने कहा कि यह प्रदर्शनी फ्रांसीसी यात्री और बौद्ध विदुषी एलेक्ज़ेंड्रा डेविड-नील के जीवन एवं उनके योगदान को समर्पित है, जिनकी विरासत आज भी प्रेरणा का स्रोत बनी हुई है। माननीय राज्यपाल ने एलेक्ज़ेंड्रा डेविड-नील द्वारा बौद्ध धर्म को अपनी रचनाओं के माध्यम से पश्चिमी जगत तक पहुँचाने के महत्वपूर्ण कार्य पर प्रकाश डाला।
राज्यपाल महोदय ने एलेक्ज़ेंड्रा डेविड-नील के सिक्किम प्रवास पर प्रकाश डालते हुए कहा कि एलेक्ज़ेंड्रा डेविड- नील ने अपने सिक्किम प्रवास के दौरान उन्होंने राजपरिवार से आम जनता तक सभी वर्गों से संवाद स्थापित किया। इन वर्षों ने उनके बौद्ध दर्शन, साधना और तिब्बती भाषा के ज्ञान को आकार दिया तथा उनकी ल्हासा यात्रा और आगे के लेखन की मजबूत नींव रखी।
माननीय राज्यपाल जी ने भारत सरकार का हृदय से आभार व्यक्त किया कि केंद्रीय बजट में उत्तर-पूर्वी भारत के लिए बौद्ध सर्किट विकास योजना की घोषणा की गई है। उन्होंने कहा कि यह महत्वपूर्ण पहल न केवल बौद्ध धर्म के प्रचार-प्रसार को नई गति प्रदान करेगी, बल्कि सिक्किम और पूर्वोत्तर राज्यों की समृद्ध सांस्कृतिक एवं आध्यात्मिक धरोहर को वैश्विक पटल पर उजागर करने का सुनहरा अवसर भी सृजित करेगी।
उन्होंने फ्रांस दूतावास, बेल्जियम एवं स्विट्जरलैंड के दूतावासों, फ्रेंच इंस्टीट्यूट इन इंडिया, फ्रांस स्थित एलेक्ज़ेंड्रा डेविड-नील संग्रहालय तथा सभी समर्पित कर्मचारियों को बधाई दी, जिनके अथक प्रयासों से यह प्रदर्शनी साकार हुई है ।
राज्यपाल महोदय ने कहा कि यह प्रदर्शनी न केवल एलेक्ज़ेंड्रा डेविड-नील के प्रति सम्मान है, बल्कि उन असंख्य महिलाओं के प्रति सम्मान भी है, जिन्होंने बौद्धिक, सांस्कृतिक और आध्यात्मिक क्षेत्र को समृद्ध किया। उन्होंने आशा व्यक्त की कि यह प्रदर्शनी हर आगंतुक को प्रेरित करेगी और नई पीढ़ियों को अपनी विरासत के संरक्षण एवं संवर्धन के लिए प्रोत्साहित करेगी।
भारत में फ्रांस के राजदूत डॉ. थियरी माथू ने अपने सम्बोधन में इस कार्यक्रम मे बुलाने हेतु धन्यवाद प्रकट करते हुए भारत एवं फ़्रांस, दोनों देशों के अच्छे और मजबूत संबंध पर प्रकाश डाला |
इस दौरान माननीय राज्यपाल ने एलेक्ज़ेंड्रा डेविड-नील के जीवन एवं उनके योगदान पर लगाई गई प्रदर्शनी का भी अवलोकन किया जिसमे उनकी 1912-1916 तक की सिक्किम प्रवास की यात्रा को दर्शाया गया है |
