On the victorious occasion of the 59th Nathula Vijay Diwas, a grand celebration was held at Nathula Pass, graced by the Hon’ble Governor of Sikkim, Shri Om Prakash Mathur, as the Chief Guest.
This glorious day commemorates the Indian Army’s decisive victory in the 1967 clashes at the Nathula and Cho La passes against the Chinese Army. The Hon’ble Governor was joined by the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Sikkim, Shri Prem Singh Tamang, MLA of Gnathang-Machong constituency, Smt. Pamin Lepcha and other dignitaries on this solemn occasion.
The program commenced with paying tribute to the martyrs by laying a wreath and lighting the eternal flame at the Sherathang War Memorial by the Hon’ble Governor, the Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri P S Tamang and other dignitaries.
Special guests included Colonel (Retired) Ranvijay Singh, son of Lieutenant General Sagat Singh; Mrs. Kumkum Singh and other family members; Major General M. S. Rathore (SM, VSM), General Officer Commanding of the 17 Mountain Division; and dignitaries from Rajasthan.
Upon his arrival at Nathula Pass, the Hon’ble Governor was presented with a detailed account of the historic 1967 battle by the Indian Army stationed there. Following this, the Hon’ble Governor unveiled a statue of Late Lieutenant General Sagat Singh, who led the Indian Army during the confrontation, displaying exceptional courage, leadership, and strategic acumen.
Addressing the gathering at Sherathang shed, the Hon’ble Governor, in his address, congratulated the Indian Army and said, “Nathula Vijay Diwas is a prominent story in India’s military history. It is both my privilege and pride to be present at this historic event today, especially since the hero of the 1967 battle, Late Lieutenant General Sagat Singh, hails from Rajasthan, my homeland. His courage, vision, and unwavering dedication to the nation continue to inspire generations.”
He also expressed his heartfelt appreciation to the Hon’ble Chief Minister, Shri Prem Singh Tamang, who had promptly accepted the suggestion made by the Hon’ble Governor for renaming Nathula Diwas to Nathula Vijay Diwas. The Hon’ble Chief Minister had sought and received approval from the Central Government and implemented the change this year. The Hon’ble Governor noted that this decision was not only historically accurate but also a significant step towards honouring the heroic saga of Indian soldiers.
The Chief Minister, in his address, paid deep tribute to the brave officers and soldiers who have laid down their lives for the nation.
He said, “This day is a matter of immense pride and is commemorated as Nathula Vijay Diwas, a continuation of the earlier Nathula Diwas. Last year, on this very day in 2024, the Hon’ble Governor of Sikkim declared it officially as Nathula Vijay Diwas. My salute to our courageous soldiers whose bravery and sacrifice ensure our safety. The heroic defence of Nathula and the surrounding difficult terrains by our troops exemplifies unmatched dedication and patriotism.
Earlier, Former Minister of the Rajasthan Government, Shri Rajendra Singh Rathore, also addressed the gathering, paying homage to the martyrs and lauding the bravery of the Indian Army.
Subsequently, the 17 Mountain Division, Indian Army, honoured the family members of Lieutenant General Sagat Singh, who had travelled from Rajasthan for the occasion. The event concluded with an interaction session between the Indian Army personnel and local citizens, symbolising unity and patriotism.
As part of the continuing events, the Hon’ble Governor, the Hon’ble Chief Minister and other dignitaries also visited the revered Baba Harbhajan Singh Temple, where they offered prayers.
59वें नाथुला विजय दिवस समारोह में राज्यपाल महोदय की गरिमामयी उपस्थिति
नाथुला विजय दिवस के अवसर पर आज नाथुला दर्रे पर एक भव्य और ऐतिहासिक समारोह का आयोजन किया गया, जिसमें सिक्किम के माननीय राज्यपाल श्री ओम प्रकाश माथुर मुख्य अतिथि के रूप में उपस्थित रहे। यह दिवस 1967 में भारतीय सेना द्वारा नाथुला और चो ला दर्रों पर प्राप्त विजय की स्मृति में मनाया जाता है।
कार्यक्रम का शुभारंभ सेरेथांग वार मेमोरियल में शहीदों को श्रद्धांजलि अर्पित करने हेतु माननीय राज्यपाल द्वारा पुष्पचक्र अर्पण एवं अमर ज्योति प्रज्वलन से हुआ। इस अवसर पर सिक्किम के माननीय मुख्यमंत्री श्री प्रेम सिंह तमांग की भी गरिमामयी उपस्थिति रही। समारोह में विशेष रूप से लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल सगत सिंह के पुत्र कर्नल (सेवानिवृत्त) रणविजय सिंह, श्रीमती कुमकुम सिंह, सहित परिवार के सदस्य,17 माउंटेन डिवीजन के जनरल ऑफिसर कमांडिंग मेजर जनरल एम. एस. राठौर (एसएम, वीएसएम), राजस्थान से पधारे अतिथि भी उपस्थित रहे।
नाथुला दर्रे पर पहुँचने के पश्चात सेना द्वारा 1967 की ऐतिहासिक झड़प पर संक्षिप्त जानकारी दी गई। इसके बाद माननीय राज्यपाल ने लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल सगत सिंह की प्रतिमा का अनावरण किया, जिन्होंने उस युद्ध में भारतीय सेना का नेतृत्व करते हुए अद्वितीय साहस और रणनीति का परिचय दिया था।
शेराथांग शेड में आयोजित मुख्य कार्यक्रम में माननीय राज्यपाल ने अपने संबोधन में कहा, “नाथुला विजय दिवस भारत के सैन्य इतिहास का स्वर्णिम अध्याय है। यह मेरा सौभाग्य और गर्व है कि आज के इस ऐतिहासिक कार्यक्रम में उपस्थित हूँ, विशेषकर तब जब 1967 के युद्ध के नायक लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल सगत सिंह उसी राजस्थान राज्य से हैं, जहाँ से मैं स्वयं आता हूँ। उनका साहस, दूरदर्शिता और राष्ट्र के प्रति समर्पण हम सभी के लिए प्रेरणा है।”
राज्यपाल महोदय ने इस अवसर पर माननीय मुख्यमंत्री श्री प्रेम सिंह तमांग को विशेष धन्यवाद ज्ञापित करते हुए कहा कि गत वर्ष मैंने ‘नाथुला दिवस’ को ‘नाथुला विजय दिवस’ के रूप में मनाए जाने का प्रस्ताव रखा था। मुख्यमंत्री महोदय ने इस सुझाव को तत्परता से स्वीकार कर केंद्र की सहमति प्राप्त की और इस वर्ष इसे साकार किया। यह निर्णय न केवल ऐतिहासिक रूप से उचित है, बल्कि वीरगाथा को सम्मान देने की दिशा में एक महत्वपूर्ण कदम भी है।
इस दौरान राजस्थान सरकार के पूर्व मंत्री श्री राजेन्द्र सिंह राठौड़ ने सभा को संबोधित किया।
इसके पश्चात राजस्थान से पधारे लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल सगत सिंह के परिजनों को भारतीय सेना द्वारा सम्मानित किया गया। कार्यक्रम का समापन राष्ट्रगान और भारतीय सेना के जवानों एवं स्थानीय नागरिकों से संवाद के साथ हुआ।
इसी कड़ी में राज्यपाल महोदय ने बाबा हरभजन सिंह मंदिर में पूजा अर्चना कर राज्य वासियों की सुख-समृद्धि और शांति की प्रार्थना की है।
