A group of inducted Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officers from various states of the country, currently undergoing their foundation training at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA), Mussoorie, as part of their Bharat Darshan programme, visited Sikkim and called on the Hon’ble Governor of Sikkim, Shri Om Prakash Mathur, at Raj Bhavan today.

The officers were warmly welcomed by the Commissioner-cum-Secretary to the Hon’ble Governor, Shri Jitendra Singh Raje, who extended his greetings and expressed hope that they had a pleasant and hospitable stay in the scenic and serene state of Sikkim.

During the interaction, the officers introduced themselves to the Hon’ble Governor and shared their observations and experiences during their visit. They highly appreciated the exceptional cleanliness maintained across the state and were particularly impressed by the innovative practice of plastic collection at regular intervals. The officers remarked that this commendable initiative reflects the deep-rooted civic sense and environmental consciousness of the people of Sikkim. They expressed their intent to explore possibilities of implementing similar practices in their respective states.

The officers also lauded the state’s well-planned tourism infrastructure, especially the provision of clean and accessible sanitation facilities. Their visit to Nathula left a lasting impression, as they witnessed firsthand the dedication and resilience of the Indian Army personnel stationed there, serving the nation in challenging terrain and extreme weather conditions. They also appreciated the unique Baba Harbhajan Singh Temple, which is diligently maintained by the Army and holds great significance.

In his address, the Hon’ble Governor expressed his happiness at welcoming the officers to Sikkim, a state that recently marked 50 years of its integration with the Indian Union. He highlighted Sikkim’s distinctive identity as a leader in organic farming and as one of the safest states in the country, particularly for women. He proudly noted that Sikkim has consistently demonstrated exemplary progress in women empowerment, with women playing leading roles across various sectors.

The Hon’ble Governor further emphasized the state’s disciplined traffic culture—characterized by a no-honking and no-overtaking policy—which reflects the civic responsibility of its citizens. He also mentioned the unmatched warmth and hospitality offered by the state’s homestays, often surpassing the comfort and service of five-star accommodations.

Speaking on the significance of Sikkim’s military history, the Hon’ble Governor referred to the historic 1967 Nathula confrontation with China. He paid tribute to the valour of Major General Sagat Singh, whose leadership played a decisive role in safeguarding the nation—a legacy that continues to be remembered with pride and gratitude.

He also noted the recent inclusion of Dokala in battlefield tourism, further enriching Sikkim’s diverse tourism offerings and drawing attention to the state’s strategic importance and historical significance.

In conclusion, the Hon’ble Governor extended his best wishes to all the officers and encouraged them to continue serving the nation with dedication, integrity, and a deep sense of purpose.

The officers also visited the Old Raj Bhavan, where they learned about its rich historical significance. Perched atop a hill, the heritage structure has witnessed three distinct phases in its evolution—beginning as the Residency, later known as India House or Barakhothi, and eventually becoming the Raj Bhavan with the commencement of the era of the Governors in Sikkim.
