28.06.2025 : The Hon’ble Governor of Sikkim, Shri Om Prakash Mathur, visited the Teesta Stage V Power Station at Balutar, Singtam, today.

The Hon’ble Governor of Sikkim, Shri Om Prakash Mathur, visited the Teesta Stage V Power Station at Balutar, Singtam, today. Upon his arrival, the Hon’ble Governor was warmly welcomed by the Gangtok District officials, Group General Manager of NHPC Teesta Stage V other officials, followed by a guard of honour by the IRB personnel.
During the visit, the Hon’ble Governor was given a comprehensive overview by Group General Manager of NHPC Teesta Stage V, Shri Jitendra Kumar, on the hydropower project of Teesta Stage V dam located in Dikchu and Teesta Stage VI dam located in Sirwani, respectively.
The Hon’ble Governor was briefed through a detailed PowerPoint presentation and technical session led by the Group General Manager. The presentation covered key aspects, including power generation capacity, commissioning details, and the salient features of both hydel power projects. Special emphasis was given to natural disasters such as the 3rd October 2023 flash floods, landslides that adversely affected power generation and infrastructure.
The briefing also included the current status of ongoing restoration works at both the Sirwani and Dikchu dam sites.
Updates were provided on financial and physical progress, Head Race Tunnel (HRT) construction and restoration, and the challenges.
The Hon’ble Governor enquired about the extent of the damage and the estimated timeline for full restoration. He advised NHPC officials to maintain close coordination with state governments’ line departments to ensure efficient restoration and long-term resilience. He also discussed the healthcare facilities being provided to the local population through the NHPC medical team.
In a gesture of social concern, the Hon’ble Governor encouraged NHPC to organize blood donation camps and implement initiatives that contribute positively to community welfare. He commended the dedication and hard work of NHPC officials and staff, particularly in the aftermath of the Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) in 2023. He extended his best wishes for the continued success of the organization and urged them to strive toward even greater achievements in the future.
The Hon’ble Governor also visited the Teesta V Power House at Balutar and the Teesta VI dam site at Sirwani to review the ongoing hydroelectric projects and assess their progress.
As part of an environmental initiative aimed at promoting ecological sustainability, the Hon’ble Governor planted a Syzygium sapling at the premises of Teesta Stage V Power House, Balutar.
During his visit, the Hon’ble Governor was accompanied by ADM of Gangtok, Shri Sisum Wangchuk; SDPO Singtam, Shri Kinga T. Bhutia; SDM Sang-Rabdang, Shri Roshan Subba; along with officials and staff from NHPC Teesta Stage V, Balutar, Singtam, and the Raj Bhavan.
