The International Year of Cooperatives (IYC) 2025 with the theme “Cooperatives Build a Better World”, was observed at Ashirvad Bhavan, Raj Bhavan today. The event was organized by the Department of Cooperation.

The Hon’ble Governor of Sikkim, Shri Om Prakash Mathur graced the occasion as the chief guest and the Hon’ble Chief Minister, Shri Prem Singh Tamang attended as the guest of honour. The programme was attended by the Hon’ble Minister for Cooperation Department, Shri Arun Upreti, MLA cum Chairman of DACS, Shri Satish Chandra Rai, Chief Secretary, Shri R. Telang, outgoing Secretary of the Cooperation Department, Smt. Gloria Namchu, Secretary of the Cooperation department, Smt. Jabi Thapa and host of dignitaries.

In his address, Hon’ble Governor congratulated all cooperative societies, SHGs and the cooperation department on the occasion. He emphasised Sikkim’s enormous growth potential through cooperatives and said that a prosperous village is the cornerstone of a developed India. He mentioned about the distinctive yak milk-based dairy product of Sikkim, “Chhurpi,”. He stated that Sikkim’s Chhurpi has the potential to gain significant demand both in domestic and international markets.
“Stronger marketing techniques are also required to advertise Sikkim’s organic products both domestically and internationally” he asserted.
In addition, the Hon’ble Governor spotlighted on the significance of more women’s involvement in furthering the cooperative movement. He claimed that everyone has the innate capacity to succeed, all they need is support and encouragement. The active involvement of farmers will further propel this industry to greater heights, he said, and he asked the Cooperation Department to support innovations. He also underlined how important it is for Krishi Vigyan Kendras and Farmer Producer Organizations to take a more active role.
Additionally, he reaffirmed his commitment to promote the theme “Cooperatives Build a Better World”, informing that the cooperative movement has opened several avenues for the empowerment of villages, farmers, especially women, and the underprivileged. The Cooperative will pave the way for the empowerment of farmers, women, SHGs etc., enabling them to live a sustainable livelihood.
He expressed that the cooperative movement is bringing a significant transformation in the lives of farmers, workers, women, and youth in the State.
He also added for the expansion reach of cooperatives, the department must commit to connecting every village and farmer. The union government has made numerous efforts to explore new areas and extend the scope of the cooperative. Under the guidance of the Hon’ble Prime Minister Modi, significant work has been done in the past to extend the reach of cooperatives to every individual and sector said the Hon’ble Governor.
Earlier, addressing the gathering, the Hon’ble Chief Minister said, “Since 2019, our government has focused on strengthening the cooperative ecosystem, guided by the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s vision of “Sahakar se Samriddhi.” Today, all Gram Panchayat Units in Sikkim are part of the cooperative network. We have ensured infrastructure, digitization, capacity building, and market incentives. PACS have been digitized and are now offering e-governance services as Common Service Centers. Two PACS have also launched Jan Aushadhi Kendras, promoting affordable healthcare.We are especially encouraging youth and women to form and lead new, innovative cooperatives.
He highlighted the vital role of cooperatives in promoting self-reliance and economic empowerment. Further he mentioned that to encourage excellence, awards were presented to the top-performing cooperatives on Independence Day.
Earlier, the Minister of Cooperation Department, Shri Arun Upreti briefed the gathering on the significance of IYC 2025. He informed that the UN declaration aims to strengthen cooperatives globally, focusing on inclusion, empowerment, and sustainability.
The event also featured a video presentation highlighting the initiatives of the Ministry of Cooperation. This was followed by the launch of a Cooperative Song and Anthem, and the inauguration of an E-Cooperative Gallery, dedicated to preserving and showcasing Sikkim’s cooperative legacy for future generations.

Besides that, the Assam Lingzey Multipurpose Cooperative Society staged a short play based on the State Government’s initiative ‘Mero Rukh Mero Santati’. Later, the Hon’ble Governor, the Hon’ble Chief Minister, the Hon’ble Minister of Cooperation Department and other dignitaries participated plantation drive at Raj Bhavan premises as part of “Ek Pedh Maa Ke Naam” and “Mero Rukh Mero Santati”.

During the event, the Tarethang Multipurpose Cooperative Society presented a Sangini Dance based on the cooperative theme.

राजभवन में आज अंतरराष्ट्रीय सहकारिता वर्ष 2025 के उपलक्ष्य में एक भव्य समारोह का आयोजन किया गया। इस वर्ष की थीम “सहकारिता एक बेहतर विश्व का निर्माण करती है” रही।

इस अवसर पर सिक्किम के माननीय राज्यपाल श्री ओम प्रकाश माथुर मुख्य अतिथि के रूप में उपस्थित रहे। माननीय मुख्यमंत्री श्री प्रेम सिंह तामांग विशिष्ट अतिथि के रूप में समारोह में सम्मिलित हुए।
माननीय सहकारिता एवं ग्रामीण विकास मंत्री श्री अरुण उप्रेती, नामची-सिंगिथांग क्षेत्र के विधायक एवं डी.ए.सी.एस. के चेयरमैन श्री सतीश चंद्र राई, मुख्य सचिव श्री आर. तेलंग, सहकारिता विभाग की पूर्व सचिव श्रीमती ग्लोरिया नामचु ,सचिव जबी थापा तथा अन्य विशिष्ट अतिथियों ने भी अपनी गरिमामयी उपस्थिति से कार्यक्रम की शोभा बढ़ाई।

कार्यक्रम के अंतर्गत राज्य की विभिन्न सहकारी संस्थाओं द्वारा उत्पादों की प्रदर्शनी लगाई गई, जिसमें SIMFED, Sikkim Cooperative Milk Producers Union Ltd., MPCS, Tailoring Units सहित अनेक संस्थाओं ने भाग लिया। प्रदर्शनी में सिक्किम के स्थानीय उत्पादों की विविधता को दर्शाया गया जिसका अवलोकन माननीय राज्यपाल ने विशिष्ट अतिथियों के साथ किया।

राज्यपाल महोदय ने अपने संबोधन में कहा कि सहकारिता के माध्यम से बेहतर विश्व के निर्माण की दिशा में पहला कदम अपने गाँव से उठाया जाना चाहिए। उन्होंने गुजरात और महाराष्ट्र जैसे राज्यों का उदाहरण देते हुए बताया कि जहाँ सहकारी संस्थाएं सशक्त हुईं, वहाँ समृद्धि ने स्वयं दस्तक दी।
“जब गाँव में सहकारी ढांचा मजबूत होगा, तो वह गाँव अपने आप संपन्न हो जाएगा।” माननीय राज्यपाल।

उन्होंने सिक्किम में सहकारिता के माध्यम से विकास की अपार संभावनाओं की ओर संकेत करते हुए कहा कि विकसित गाँव ही विकसित भारत की नींव है। सिक्किम के याक के दूध से निर्मित विशिष्ट उत्पाद ‘छुरपी’ का उल्लेख करते हुए उन्होंने कहा कि यदि इसे उचित मार्केटिंग मिले, तो इसकी माँग देश-विदेश में व्यापक रूप से हो सकती है। इसी प्रकार, सिक्किम के ऑर्गेनिक उत्पादों को भी राष्ट्रीय और अंतरराष्ट्रीय स्तर पर पहचान दिलाने और मार्केटिंग के और अधिक सशक्त बनाने पर बल दिया।

राज्यपाल महोदय ने सहकारी आंदोलन को आगे बढ़ाने में महिलाओं की अधिकतम भागीदारी पर विशेष बल दिया। उन्होंने कहा कि हर व्यक्ति के भीतर कुछ कर गुजरने की सामर्थ्य होती है, बस उसे पहचानने और प्रोत्साहित करने की आवश्यकता है। उन्होंने सहकारिता विभाग से नवाचार को बढ़ावा देने का आग्रह किया और कहा कि किसानों की सक्रिय भागीदारी इस क्षेत्र को नई ऊँचाइयों तक ले जा सकती है। साथ ही, उन्होंने किसान उत्पादक संगठनों और कृषि विज्ञान केंद्रों की अधिक सक्रिय भूमिका की आवश्यकता पर भी बल दिया।

कार्यक्रम में तारेथांग बहुउद्देशीय सहकारी समिति द्वारा सहकारी थीम पर संगिनी नृत्य प्रस्तुत किया गया।
इस दौरान वीडियो प्रस्तुति के माध्यम से सहकारिता मंत्रालय की पहलों को प्रदर्शित किया गया साथ ही
सहकारी गीत एवं एंथम का विमोचन किया गया, जिसके पश्चात ई-सहकारी गैलेरी का उद्घाटन हुआ, जो सिक्किम की सहकारी विरासत को आने वाली पीढ़ियों को समर्पित है।
इसी क्रम में, असम लिंगजे बहुउद्देशीय सहकारी समिति द्वारा राज्य सरकार की पहल ‘मेरो रूख मेरो संतति’ पर आधारित एक लघु नाटक भी प्रस्तुत किया गया।
