The Governor of Sikkim, Shri Om Prakash Mathur inaugurated “Sikkim Prerna Sthal” today at Bardang under Pakyong district.
The Sikkim Prerna Sthal was conceptualised by the Governor’s Secretariat under the guidance of Governor and it was constructed by the Indian Army in collaboration with the state government and with CSR support from the Cello Foundation. .

The inauguration ceremony was attended by DGP, Sikkim, Akshay Sachdeva, GOC of Black Cat Division M. S. Rathore, senior Army officials, District Collector of Pakyong, officials state administration, war veterans and family members of martyrs soldiers.

Sikkim Prerna Sthal bears the names of 294 fallen soldiers from 13 operations along Sikkim’s borders and is part of the Centre’s ‘Rannbhoomi Darshan’ initiative. Prerna Sthal is a memorial honouring 22 Indian Army personnel who lost their lives in the Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) in October 2023. The site has now been expanded and dedicated to all soldiers from Sikkim and across the nation who made the supreme sacrifice in various operations.

Sikkim Prerna Sthal aimed at promoting battlefield tourism namely; Nathula Pass, Dokala Pass and Cho La Pass as tourist destinations.

Addressing the gathering, the Governor Shri Om Prakash Mathur said “Inauguration of Sikkim Prerna Sthal is a great day not only for Sikkim, but the entire nation, as it is the day when we pay respect to the fallen soldiers who fought wars on Sikkim’s borders with grit and determination. Their sacrifices have made our motherland secure and safe from enemies. Today we salute
those brave souls.”

The Governor said that while people are largely aware of the 1962 Indo-China war, and many are unaware of the 1967 clashes with Chinese where the sacrifices made by Indian army during the 1967 war with China. He stated that under the command of Major General (Lt.) Sagat Singh, the Indian Army successfully defeated and forced the Chinese soldiers onto the back foot.

“With this tribute to our brave fallen, we will let the world know how much blood was spilt on the Sikkim’s borders of Nathula, Cho La and Dokala,” the Governor asserted.

The Governor expressed his gratitude to the Indian Army, the State administration and Cello Foundation for their valuable contributions toward the establishment of Sikkim Prerna Sthal. He stated that the Prerna Sthal will serve not only as a place of remembrance of brave soldiers but also as a source of inspiration for future generations. He further highlighted the importance of Nathula Vijay Diwas celebration on 11 September annually to honor the Indian army’ victory over Chinese soldiers in 1967.

The memorial complex includes a holistic healing park, an audio-visual hall showcasing Sikkim’s military history, a cafeteria and other public facilities.

On this occasion, two documentary films namely; “The Sikkim Saga and “Sentinel of Sikkim” were released.

आज एक ऐतिहासिक अवसर पर सिक्किम के माननीय राज्यपाल श्री ओम प्रकाश माथुर ने बरदांग में ‘सिक्किम प्रेरणा स्थल’ के विस्तारित एवं नवीनीकृत परिसर का मुख्य अतिथि के रूप में उद्घाटन किया। यह समारोह भारतीय सेना (ब्लैक कैट डिवीजन) के तत्वावधान में राज्य सरकार के सहयोग से आयोजित हुआ। इस अवसर पर ब्लैक कैट डिवीजन के जीओसी मेजर जनरल एम. एस. राठौर (AVSM, SM, VSM) उपस्थित रहे एवं आँय सेना के अधिकारियों की उपस्थिती रही |
सिक्किम प्रेरणा स्थल की संकल्पना एवं विकास की यात्रा लोकभवन, सिक्किम में माननीय राज्यपाल के सक्रिय सहयोग, मार्गदर्शन एवं दूरदर्शिता से संभव हुई है। यह स्थल न केवल अक्टूबर 2023 की बाढ़ आपदा में शहीद हुए 22 वीर जवानों की स्मृति में स्थापित हुआ, बल्कि अब इसे विस्तार देकर सिक्किम एवं पूरे देश के उन सभी सैनिकों को समर्पित किया गया है जिन्होंने विभिन्न अभियानों में बलिदान दिया। यहां कुल 13 अभियानों में शहीद हुए 294 वीरों के नाम स्वर्णाक्षरों में अंकित हैं।
गौरवपूर्ण क्षण बताते हुए माननीय राज्यपाल ने सर्वप्रथम भारतीय सेना, राज्य सरकार, सेलो फाउंडेशन (CSR सहयोग) एवं सभी सहयोगियों का हार्दिक आभार व्यक्त किया। उन्होंने कहा कि यह स्थल अब केवल स्मृति का केंद्र नहीं, बल्कि भावी पीढ़ियों के लिए प्रेरणा का स्रोत बनेगा। यह स्थल मिलिट्री-सिविल फ्यूज़न का उत्कृष्ट उदाहरण है।
राज्यपाल महोदय ने कहा कि इस स्थल पर आने वाली पीढ़ियां और सभी आगंतुक हमारे इतिहास की गौरवशाली घटनाओं से अवगत हो सकेंगे, जिससे राष्ट्रप्रेम, त्याग एवं वीरता की भावना सदैव जीवंत रहेगी। उन्होंने यह भी कहा कि जिस प्रकार अन्य सीमावर्ती राज्यों के शहीदों की शौर्य गाथा उजागर होती है, उसी प्रकार चलचित्र, डाक्यूमेंट्री आदि के माध्यम से सिक्किम की भी पहचान स्थापित होनी चाहिए।

इस कार्यक्रम में दो डॉक्यूमेंट्री फिल्में – “सेंटीनेल ऑफ सिक्किम” और “द सिक्किम सागा” का विमोचन हुआ। “द सिक्किम सागा” में 1967 के नाथू ला युद्ध में मेजर जनरल सगत सिंह की शौर्य गाथा प्रदर्शित की गई है।
उल्लेखनीय है कि पिछले वर्ष माननीय राज्यपाल ने अपनी दूरदर्शिता और सोच से नाथू ला दिवस को ‘नाथू ला विजय दिवस’ की मान्यता दिलाते हुए इच्छा व्यक्त की थी कि 1967 के नाथू ला युद्ध की सैन्य गौरव गाथा को विशेष रूप से उजागर किया जाए। इसी कड़ी में मेजर जनरल सगत सिंह (तत्कालीन 17 माउंटेन डिवीजन के GOC) की वीरता एवं साहसिक भूमिका को सभी के समक्ष लाने का निरंतर प्रयास किया गया है। उन्होंने उच्च कमान के पीछे हटने के निर्देशों को ठुकराते हुए नाथू ला पर अडिग रहने का साहस दिखाया। उनकी दृढ़ता, रणनीतिक दूरदर्शिता एवं नेतृत्व ने भारतीय सेना को उल्लेखनीय सफलता दिलाई, जिससे 1962 के बाद राष्ट्र का आत्मविश्वास और सैन्य गौरव पुनः स्थापित हुआ। यह युद्ध सिक्किम की सीमाओं पर भारत की संप्रभुता की रक्षा का सुनहरा अध्याय है।
प्रेरणा स्थल परिसर में रणभूमि एवी हॉल (सिक्किम की सैन्य इतिहास प्रदर्शित करने वाला), कैफेटेरिया और रिफ्लेक्सोलॉजी पार्क जैसी सुविधाएं उपलब्ध हैं। यह पहल बैटलफील्ड टूरिज्म को बढ़ावा देती है और डोक-ला, चो-ला जैसे महत्वपूर्ण स्थलों के साथ पर्यटकों को सिक्किम की वीरता से जोड़ती है।
आज के कार्यक्रम में प्लेक अनावरण, सर्वधर्म पूजा के बाद वीर शहीद सैनिकों को माननीय राज्यपाल द्वारा पुष्पांजलि अर्पित की गई। इस दौरान सांस्कृतिक कार्यक्रम में स्कूल के बच्चों द्वारा मार्शल आर्ट्स, स्नो लायन डांस (सिंघी चाम) और चेंडमेलम कलारीपयट्टू जैसी प्रस्तुतियां दी गईं। कार्यक्रम में बड़ी संख्या में स्थानीय नागरिक, जनप्रतिनिधि, सेना के अधिकारी, जवान, शहीदों के परिजन और स्कूल के बच्चे उपस्थित रहे।
