Sikkim Governor, Shri Om Prakash Mathur today inaugurated the 1st State-Level Kho-Kho Championship 2026 at Khel Gaon, Reshithang near here. The championship was organised by the Sikkim Kho-Kho Association which will be concluded on 5 April 26.
The Minister for Health and Family Welfare and Culture Departments, Shri G. T Dhungel, members of Sikkim Legislative Assembly, special invitees, senior officers, executive members of Sikkim Olympic Association, athletes and students were present among other dignitaries at the event.
Addressing the event as the chief guest, the Governor Shri Om Prakash Mathur expressed his happiness to witnessed the championship.
The Governor said, “Kho-Kho is far more than a sport, it is a symbol of India’s cultural ethos and the fragrance of its soil. It is historic event for the State where the children from across the state would be displaying their potential and talents. Kho-Kho nurtures agility, strategy, teamwork, discipline, and the ability to take swift decisions.”
He appreciated the large turnout, with 24 teams from all the districts participating in the competition.
He emphasised that the Khelo India Youth games has provided opportunities for many young players. He underscored that the Khelo India program was building modern sports infrastructure across the country.
He congratulated the organisers for the conducting of the state level championship. He further extended his best wishes to all the participating teams and students and added that this tournament further strengthen the spirit of sportsmanship and may it further popularise the beautiful game of Kho- Kho.
To mark the opening ceremony of the event, an oath taking was held followed by march past by participating teams.

सिक्किम के माननीय राज्यपाल श्री ओम प्रकाश माथुर ने आज खेल गांव, रेशीथांग, गंगटोक में खो-खो फेडरेशन ऑफ इंडिया के अंतर्गत आयोजित प्रथम राज्य स्तरीय खो-खो चैंपियनशिप 2026 का शुभारंभ किया।
प्रतियोगिता में सब-जूनियर (बॉय एवं गर्ल) तथा ओपन (मेन एवं वुमेन) श्रेणियों में मुकाबले खेले जाएंगे।
माननीय राज्यपाल ने उद्घाटन समारोह को संबोधित करते हुए कहा कि खो-खो भारत का पारंपरिक खेल है, जो हमारी सांस्कृतिक विरासत से गहराई से जुड़ा हुआ है। उन्होंने छोटे बच्चों की इस खेल में सक्रिय भागीदारी देखकर अपनी प्रसन्नता व्यक्त की। राज्यपाल महोदय ने जोर देकर कहा कि इस खेल को प्राथमिकता दी जानी चाहिए क्योंकि यह युवाओं में टीम भावना, अनुशासन और शारीरिक स्फूर्ति को बढ़ावा देता है।
राज्यपाल महोदय ने इस बात पर संतोष व्यक्त किया कि राज्य के विभिन्न जिलों से कुल 24 टीमें इस प्रतियोगिता में भाग ले रही हैं। उन्होंने खिलाड़ियों, आयोजकों और कोचों को शुभकामनाएं दीं तथा विश्वास जताया कि सिक्किम के प्रतिभाशाली खिलाड़ी इस मंच से आगे बढ़कर राष्ट्रीय एवं अंतरराष्ट्रीय स्तर पर अपनी पहचान बनाएंगे।
प्रतियोगिता 3 अप्रैल से 5 अप्रैल 2026 तक खेल गांव, रेशीथांग, गंगटोक में आयोजित की जा रही है।
इस अवसर पर सिक्किम सरकार के स्वास्थ्य एवं परिवार कल्याण विभाग के माननीय मंत्री श्री जी. टी. ढूँगेल, माननीय क्षेत्र विधायक श्रीमती कला राई , माननीय गंगटोक क्षेत्र विधायक श्री डीले नामग्याल, पेट्रोन श्री अर्जुन घातानी, खो-खो एसोसिएशन के अध्यक्ष श्री बी.के. रोका सहित कार्यकारी सदस्य तथा खेल एवं युवा मामलों के अधिकारी उपस्थित रहे।
