Message of Governor on the World Environment Day, 2023.

    Publish Date: June 4, 2023

This momentous occasion of World Environment Day holds immense significance for all of us, as we gather to celebrate and reaffirm our commitment to protecting and preserving the environment that sustains us all. Sikkim, the jewel of the Himalayas, is known for its breath-taking landscapes, rich biodiversity, and a deep-rooted ethos of sustainability. As the custodians of this pristine land, it is our duty to lead by example and inspire the world with our efforts to safeguard our environment.

The theme for this year’s World Environment Day is “Beat Plastic Pollution,” a pressing issue that affects every corner of our planet. Plastic pollution poses a severe threat to our environment, our health, and the future of planet Earth. It is a global menace that threatens our ecosystems, endangers our wildlife, and pollutes our rivers and oceans. Sikkim, blessed with natural beauty, need utmost care to face this challenge. It is high time we recognize the urgency of this issue and take concrete steps to eliminate the scourge of plastic pollution from our lives. We must act decisively to address this issue and set an example for the rest of the world.

Plastic, with its durability and versatility, has become an integral part of our daily lives. From the packaging of our food to the materials used in our electronic devices, it has undoubtedly brought us convenience. However, this convenience has come at a great cost. The excessive and irresponsible use of plastic has led to devastating consequences for our environment. Our water bodies, rivers, prime wildlife habitats are turning into vast garbage patches, aquatic and terrestrial life forms are suffering, and our landfills are overflowing with plastic waste.

Our government and the people of Sikkim have long recognized the importance of sustainability and environmental conservation. We have undertaken ambitious initiatives to preserve our fragile ecosystems and promote a harmonious coexistence between humans and nature. Sikkim became India’s first fully organic state in 2016, symbolizing the peoples’ commitment to sustainable agriculture and the protection of our soil, water, and air.

On this World Environment Day, let us reflect on the strides we have made and reinvigorate our efforts to combat plastic pollution. We must engage in a collective endeavour to refuse, reduce, reuse, and recycle plastic waste. The state government has already taken significant steps to address this issue. We have banned single-use plastics in the state and are actively promoting alternatives such as eco-friendly bags, utensils, and packaging materials.

Plastic pollution is a global problem that requires a global response. We must acknowledge that every single one of us has a role to play in addressing this issue. It is not enough to rely solely on government policies and regulations; individual actions and collective efforts are equally crucial. It is crucial that we actively choose to decrease our utilization of disposable plastic items and embrace sustainable lifestyle alternatives.

Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi introduced Mission LiFE to the world at the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) in Glasgow and launched it in the presence of the UN Secretary General António Guterres, at the Statue of Unity, Ekta Nagar, Gujarat. He highlighted the importance of unity in the fight against climate change, noting that it goes beyond government responsibility and needs contributions from individuals, families and communities.

Education and awareness play a crucial role in creating a lasting impact. Educating ourselves and others about the harmful effects of plastic pollution and the importance of responsible consumption is an essential step towards change. We need to raise awareness about the impact of plastic waste on our ecosystems, wildlife, and human health. We must engage in meaningful conversations, organize workshops to spread this message far and wide. By doing so, we can empower individuals, communities, and local businesses to make informed choices that contribute to our cleaner and greener future. Let us instill in our younger generation a deep appreciation for nature and a sense of stewardship towards the environment. By doing so, we can foster a generation of responsible citizens who will carry forward the torch of environmental protection and sustainability.

Furthermore, we must harness the power of innovation and technology to find sustainable solutions to the PLASTIC PROBLEM. We should support research and development in eco-friendly materials, waste management systems, and recycling technologies. It is through innovation and collaboration that we can unlock new possibilities and overcome the challenges we face today.
As responsible citizens, we can take small steps to reduce our plastic footprint by saying no to single-use plastics, carrying reusable bags, opting for stainless steel or glass containers, and choosing refillable water bottles.

Governments and industries have a vital role in driving sustainable change. We need more stringent policies and regulations that promote the reduction, reuse, and recycling of plastic waste. We should incentivize the development and use of eco-friendly materials, while industries must take responsibility for the life cycle of their products, ensuring that they are designed with recyclability in mind. It is crucial to foster innovation and invest in research and development for sustainable alternatives to plastic.

We must prioritize waste management systems that collect, sort and recycle plastic waste to prevent it from ending up in our rivers, oceans, and natural habitats. Segregation of waste at the source should come first. We should also support local initiatives that promote community-based recycling programs and encourage the use of recycled plastic products. Together, we can make a difference by adopting sustainable practices, spreading awareness, and advocating for change.

In conclusion, I urge each one of you to embrace the spirit of World Environment Day and take a pledge to protect our environment. We have the power to protect our environment and shape a better future for generations to come. Our actions today will determine the health and well-being of our planet tomorrow. Let us work together, hand in hand, to beat plastic pollution and create a future where our land and resources are preserved for future generations. Sikkim has always been a beacon of green policies and sustainability, and today, let us strengthen our resolve to become a model state in environmental conservation. Together, let us rise to the challenge and ensure a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable world for all.

I have faith in the indomitable spirit and determination of the people of Sikkim. Together, we can build a greener, cleaner, and more sustainable future for our beloved state and the world at large.
Thank you, and let us celebrate World Environment Day with renewed dedication and action!
