    Village Adoption

    Former Governor Ganga Prasad attended a meeting of the Governor’s adopted village at Namthang Maneydara GPU on 5th may 2022. Also present were Namchi district collector M. Bharani Kumar, SSP K. L. Tenzing, ADC Anant Jain, Namthang BDO Yogen Syangden, panchayat president Birendra Kumar Pradhan, officials from various line departments, panchayat members and public.

    Addressing the gathering, Governor Ganga Prasad spoke about adoption of Namthang Maneydara GPU into a model GPU. This adoption will focus on the economic development and transforming this GPU as one of a kind in the State which he said can be possible via participatory planning and also by boosting the various local resources and institutions available in the vicinity. He further announced various support from his side towards the upliftment of the GPU which includes a grant of Rs. 7.5 lakh for building of trekking trail, tourist viewpoint and other basic tourism related infrastructures. Likewise, Rs. 50,000 will be allocated to Eklavya Self Help Group to buy equipment and an assistance of Rs. 2.5 lakh towards Namthang Bamboo Handicrafts.

    The Governor highlighted the important role that the panchayats play in bringing about substantial progress at the grass roots level and urged them to be self-reliant and create an eco-system that will allow the local products made by the domestic residents to be sold at global market. This kind of eco-system will bring closer to achieve the ideals of being ‘Aatma Nirbhar’ and aid our country to be independent.

    Delving on farmers and their yields, the Governor updated that if needed the farmers have to learn new technique in order to add value to their produce and if possible they should cultivate plants and trees according to the geographical and weather conditions, so that the farmers can gain maximum profit. He added that since Sikkim is known for its organic farming this factor needs to exponentially tapped and with appropriate techniques like proper marketing, attractive packaging, farmers can sell their products globally and could emerge as one of the most valuable players in the agri-enterprises business.

    The Governor also highlighted the significance of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav which, he said, is an initiative to commemorate 75 years of India’s independence. He added that the sacrifice of the martyrs should not be forgotten as they worked hard for the liberation of this country.

    During the course of the programme, panchayat development assistant Mukunda Dhungel presented the demographic profile of the GPU. He also shared the requirements and potential of Namthang Maneydara.
