IN MEMORY OF OUR BELOVED KARUNA SINGH
|
In the 50th year of our marriage, on 1st April, 2010 my beloved wife Karuna suddenly moved to the other world as willed by God.
On March 10, 1961, Karuna and I got married while she was about 18 and I was over 19 years. She was then a graduate student of Patna Women’s College and I had just become Lecturer in Political Science in Patna University. It was an arranged marriage.
Subsequently, on my entry into the Indian Administrative Service we moved from
Bihar to Assam then to New Delhi (back and forth), Washington DC and finally to
Sikkim. She raised the family which included our three children and six
grand-children.
Karuna’s company was an assurance of immense value that I was
not alone in the journey of life.
Most of the time Karuna saw the world with her
heart and this was a great support. She conducted herself with great dignity
both in high and low times. She was both dear and precious.
Karuna had the
quality of connecting herself with another person at inner level by being
sincere and compassionate, helpful and yet quiet.
Karuna lived life on her own
terms. Her life was disciplined and transparent, and her heart was pure. She
loved people, and encouraged them to become successful.
Karuna was a beautiful
person in every sense of the term.
I am proud of the fact that Karuna was my life partner.

Dear Shri Singh,
I was sad to hear the demise of Karuna Bhabhi. It is a loss not only to the family, but also to all of us.
She was one of the most interesting personalities I have known. She was a remarkable human being who spread light and joy wherever she went. She strove to make earth a world of harmony, beauty and love. She had transparent sincerity and unswerving regard for truth. She was so humane and innocent till the end.
But then what is life about? Arrivals and departures. Joy and tragedy. Celebration and sorrow. And in this eternal system, saying good bye- however inevitable it may be – is not an easy thing.
Most, in fact all of us, have known or are destined to know sorrow at some point or other in our lives; but tragedy which is only sorrow magnified to a very high and intense degree fortunately, it usually beyond the realm of normal human experience. This tragedy has left us devastated and it is difficult to accept what has happened. In spite of everything, the birds sing on the trees, the sun also shines, children laugh and play and the business of life goes on. And we, those who remain behind, must return from the wings to the centre stage of life and pick up our role from where we left off for a while. The show must go on…. trite saying no doubt, but true.
Each of us feels that his own world id safe and far removed from the horrors that one hears about. But now I know better, I know that is requires but a single second to change irrevocably our former life so that nothing but nothing can ever be the same again. Gone, too is the sense of isolation from the tide of the affairs of men.
The consciousness that we are still “involved in mankind” means being “recalled to life”. As we walk slowly along the path to normalcy, we realize that, surely, we shall overcome. I hope it will also apply to all of us.
In this hour of your deep grief, I know only too well how words are of so little consequence. Nevertheless…I send you my deep felt feelings of empathy and support.
With Regards,
Your sincerely,

Dear Sir,
I join with so many others who knew Mrs. Karuna Singh in offering our deepest sympathy on her passing. Although it is little consolation at this sad time, it should be of some satisfaction to know that in her passing you can celebrate the end of a very long and productive life.
The measure of a life well-lived is through the lives they touched and the sorrow they leave behind. If the outpouring of sympathy on her loss is any indication, and it most certainly is, you can proudly and confidently say that her indeed was a life well-lived.
May you find peace and comfort in knowing that her loss is felt by all who knew and loved her.
In sympathy,

Dear Balmiki,
This indeed is extremely sad, and shocking.
Even as we are deeply grieved, we realize that this cannot be but a fraction of what you must be going through.
One knows that you are a person of deep philosophical understanding and equanimity, but a personal loss like this affects all us humans and alike – we are left desolate, bewildered, and feel totally lost and lonely when such an integral part of our lives is taken away.
We had known Karuna for long, and were always aware of her own high qualities of head and heart, as also her support for you in all phases of life.
Amrita especially had a soft corner for her in her heart, and just cannot believe that this has happened. It would continue be difficult for very long to accept that she is no longer with us.
Needless to say, in this hour of grief, we are with you.
With deepest condolences,

PRAYERS
In the Next Room
Death is nothing at all :
I have only slipped away into the next room.
I am I and you are you;
Whatever we were to each other, that we are still.
Call me by my old familiar name,
Speak to me in the easy way which you always used.
Put no difference in your tone;
Wear no forced air or solemnity or sorrow.
Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes we enjoyed together.
Pray, smile, think of me, pray for me.
Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight?
I am but waiting for you, for an interval,
Somewhere very near,
Just around the corner.
All is well

Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) after the death of his wife Smt. Mrinalini Devi in 1902 sings in Geetanjali (first published in Bengali in 1910) as follows:-
Have you not heard his silent steps? He comes, comes, ever comes.
In sorrow after sorrow it is his steps that press upon my heart, and it is the golden touch of his feet that makes my joy to shine.
Many a song have I sung in many a mood of mind, but all their notes have always proclaimed, ‘He comes, comes, ever comes.
