PRESS RELEASE

SKM/GOV/PRO/2017/24 5th April, 2017

Disaster Management Plan

Hon’ble Governor of Sikkim, Shri Shriniwas Patil at Raj Bhavan today reviewed State Disaster Management Plan prepared by Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority. A team from State Disaster Management Cell of Land Revenue and Disaster Management Department led by Secretary and State Relief Commissioner Shri Tsegyal Tashi made a special power point presentation on the disaster preparedness at various levels in the State and provided a broad outline of the framework in place. A special focus was also made on the vulnerability assessment and mitigation measures undertaken on various incidents across the State.

While commending on the work done by the Disaster Management Cell of the government, Hon’ble Governor stressed that unless the plans and preparedness on paper does not translate to the reasoning and action of a common man who is the first responder during disaster, our efforts would not yield desired result. Hon’ble Governor shared his experience of managing major disasters and gave some practical inputs to the team towards making Sikkim a disaster resilient state. He expressed his happiness on the fact that disaster management has already been incorporated in the school curriculum in Sikkim above primary level since last one decade.

Hon’ble Governor also asked the Disaster Management Cell to focus on making common citizens the stakeholders of the management plan and bring the behavioural changes in them through various capacity building initiatives and awareness camps.

PRO to Governor
