 Hon’ble Governor of Sikkim, Shri Shriniwas Patil has congratulated and extended his best wishes to Maj. Bishal Thapa

Hon’ble Governor of Sikkim Shri Shriniwas Patil today felicitated Mr. Singhi Kalden Bhutia, the recipient of Breed Conservation Award on Tibettan Breed of Sheep. The award was conferred on him by ICAR National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources, Karnal, Haryana. He was accompanied by Smt Usha Lachungpa, PRSF, Forest Environment and Wildlife Management Department, Government of Sikkim.

Shri Kalden is said to be the only surviving herdsman owning 195 sheeps of Tibettan breed in Sikkim. It may be mentioned that the Tibettan breed of sheep is available above the altitude of 16000 ft and is endangered due to various factors. At present only one herd owned by Shri Kalden is surviving in Thangu village above Lachen in North Sikkim. Since many generation the family of Shri Kalden is in the profession of keeping this rare herd of sheep which is in grave danger of getting extinct.


Hon’ble Governor congratulated him on getting recognition at the national level and hailed his passion to keep the tradition alive. Hon’ble Governor also assured him to take up his concerns to the respective State and Central agencies so that his tradition and the breed of sheep is preserved in Sikkim.
